Journey Brown Medically Retires From Football

On Wednesday night, Penn State Running Back Journey Brown stated on Twitter that he will be medically retiring from football. Brown said in a statement posted on his Twitter account, “I have been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which will force me to medically retire from the game of football.” You can read his full statement below.

The statement comes with surprise, even with the star running back missing the first three games of the season. This is a condition that, as many know, took the life of basketball star, Hank Gathers, in the middle of a basketball game. I could not even imagine that happening to another person, much less Journey Brown, one of our own fan favorites. In a year full of tragedies around the world, this certainly makes the list with Brown’s dream of being an NFL player is now gone, as well.

In 2019, Brown broke out in a big way in a crowded Nittany Lion back field. He rushed for 890 yards and averaged 6.9 yards per carry. He tallied 100-yard games against Pitt, Minnesota, Indiana, and Rutgers. But, it was his Penn State bowl game record, 202-yard game against Memphis in the 2019 Cotton Bowl that started to make Brown a national player to watch. Brown came into 2020 with huge expectations, alongside Noah Cain. But, due to Brown’s condition and Cain’s injury in the first game of the season, the Penn State back field has struggled so far in 2020.

In 2019, Journey Brown earned the Tim Shaw Thrive Award. The award is named after Shaw, a former Penn State linebacker from 2003-2006, who is battling ALS, or better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Brown earned the award, with the description of the award being, “a student-athlete who has overcome adversities and been an inspiration to fellow teammates”. Now, for 2020, and going forward, Brown will have to overcome many adversities and will most certainly serve as inspiration for fellow teammates as a symbol of you never know when your last snap will be.

From the For The Glory team, we thank you Journey Brown for your contribution to the Penn State Football Team and the Penn State community. We wish you nothing but the best in your future.

Let’s enjoy some Journey Brown highlights
