Week 1 Predictions: Idaho Vandals
It’s finally time for us to give you our predictions for the first game of the season. As you should probably know by now, Penn State hosts the Idaho Vandals on Saturday at 3:30 PM EST in Beaver Stadium.
The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. If you want to know more about the matchup you can read our preview here or if you want to just get a general breakdown of how the two teams matchup, you can checkout our preview graphic below. At the time this was written, the spread was Penn State -39.5. Let’s get on to the predictions.
Brandon Musso (0-0) & (0-0) vs. The Spread
Although it may just be a season opener, it’s also the beginning of a new era of Penn State football. The Nittany Lions are breaking in a brand new quarterback and that’s a big deal. That adds a whole other meaning to “shaking off the rust” coming out of summer camp. I think the Penn State offense comes out and plays a sloppy game as Sean Clifford and the rest of the offense adjust to their new surroundings. They will score some points but won’t look as crisp as some might expect. The defense has similar first game struggles but manages to keep the Vandals offense at bay.

Kraigen Rasalla (0-0) & (0-0) vs. The Spread
Ahhh!!! It’s finally time to make some predictions on games this year! The potential of this 2019 team has me beyond excited and I think their performance on Saturday against Idaho will leave me even more excited after the game.
I’m willing to bet that Offensive Coordinator Ricky Rahne will ease the young Penn State offense into the game with a few screen passes and runs up the middle. This will create confidence for the offense led by Sean Clifford as they break in their new starters.
The defense will come out flying around and swarming around the football. I think it is fair to expect at least 5 sacks from this defense on Saturday with Yetur Gross-Matos and Shaka Toney creating havoc on the edges.
I think the Penn State running backs will be the highlight of the day. With four players, Ricky Slade, Journey Brown, Devyn Ford, and Noah Cain, all figuring to get significant playing time, I think the Nittany Lions will run it down the throats of the Idaho defense.
Penn State shows they are a force to be reckon with in the season opener.

Cory Lestochi (0-0) & (0-0) vs. The Spread
Both of my fellow writers here at For The Glory don’t see the Nittany Lions cover the spread. Look, I am not saying Idaho is bad, but, never mind…I am saying they’re bad. This team isn’t even on the same level as the typical MAC schools Penn State usually beats up to start the year. On top of that, their best returning tackler is suspended for this game. Expect the Vandals to try and use Penn State’s defensive speed against them with reverses and misdirections. I don’t think it’s going to matter though, because of this Nittany Lion front seven. Penn State covers.
